Methods: Videotapes of videofluoroscopic swallowing examinations (VFSEs) of 69 normal subjects were analyzed. Results: Results yielded a significant effect for age between younger and older subjects for both duration of UES opening (DUESO) and maximum width of UES opening (MWUESO) (p < .01). No gender differences were observed. Discussion & Conclusion: These differences may be related to muscle weakness with aging. However, older subjects did not show aspiration. These normal data of UES opening will be used for comparisons with stroke patients who exhibit aspiration in future research. (Korean Journal of Communication Disorders 2009;14;109-116)

Upper esophageal sphincter impedance as a marker of sphincter opening diameter.

The measurement of the physical extent of opening of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) during bolus swallowing has to date relied on videofluoroscopy. Theoretically luminal impedance measured during bolus flow should be influenced by luminal diameter. In this study, we measured the UES nadir impedance (lowest value of impedance) during bolus swallowing and assessed it as a potential correlat...

Biomechanics of failed deglutitive upper esophageal sphincter relaxation in neurogenic dysphagia.

Our aims were to examine the etiology and biomechanical properties of the nonrelaxing upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and the relationship between UES opening and failed relaxation. We examined the relationships among swallowed bolus volume, intrabolus pressure, sagittal UES diameter, the pharyngeal swallow response, and geniohyoid shortening in 18 patients with failed UES relaxation, 23 healt...

Biomechanics of Failed Deglutitive Upper Esophageal Sphincter (ues) Relaxation in Patients with Neurogenic Dysphagia

Background: The biophysical properties and etiology the of the non-relaxing upper esophageal sphincter (UES) are unknown. Our aims, in patients with manometrically confirmed failed UES relaxation, were to examine: 1) the etiology and biomechanical properties of the UES, 2) the relationship between UES opening and failed relaxation and determinants of sphincter opening. Methods: We examined the ...

Swallowing Function Defined by Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies after Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: a Prospective Study

This study evaluated factors related to swallowing dysfunction after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) using videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). Preoperative and postoperative VFSSs were done with 5 mL diluted barium. Oral transit time, pharyngeal delay time, pharyngeal response time (PRT), and pharyngeal transit time were measured. Hyoid bone movement and upper esophageal...

Videofluoroscopic kinesiologic analysis of swallowing: defining a standard plane.

PURPOSE The Videofluorographic Swallowing Study (VFSS) has become the routine method for assessing swallowing dysfunction and accordingly, much research has been conducted on this procedure. However, due to a lack of standardization of the method of analysis of VFSS, it is often difficult to compare the results of such studies. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study of VFSS's spatial measu...
